About Asics Tiger Onitsuka

Originally founded  on September 1, 1949  by  Kihachiro Onitsuka as Onitsuka Co Ltd, "ASICS" is an acronym of  Latin phrase "anima sana in corpore sano" which translates to "a healthy soul in a healthy body" or "a sound mind in a sound body". Kihachiro Onitsuka, began manufacturing basketball shoes in his home town of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. . On July 5, 1958, They amalgamated with a sales subsidiary, Tokyo Onitsuka Co., Ltd. which was originally a manufacturing subsidiary, toand become Onitsuka Co., Ltd.,. Following this, on June 1, 1963, Onitsuka Co., Ltd., absorbed into Chuo Sangyo Co., Ltd. (established on May 27, 1943, and renamed Onitsuka Co., Ltd. on June 1, 1963), which was on a break in business at that time, in order to change the per value of the stock from 500 yen to 50 yen.

Thereafter, on July 21, 1977, the new Onitsuka Co., Ltd. merged with GTO Co., Ltd, a manufacturer of sports wear and goods, and JELENK Co., Ltd, a manufacturer of sports wear, and became the present ASICS Corporation. Since this major merger, ASICS has grown into one of the leading sporting manufacturers within the industry. Despite the name change, a vintage range of Asics shoes are still produced and sold internationally under the Onitsuka label.

SERIES OF ASICS TIGER ONITSUKA

NIPPON 60
The Onitsuka Tiger Nippon 60 was one of the first ever Onitsuka Tiger shoes and were created as a prototype to be worn at the Rome Olympics in 1960 as a delegation shoe for the Japanese Olympic Team (a delegation shoe is worn by the Olympic athletes as the parade into the arena). Its low profile design became the forerunner to the classic Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66. At the time, the now famous Onitsuka Tiger stripes were yet to appear (they were first used in 1966 with the launch of the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66). Instead the Japanese rising sun flag was used on the side of the shoe. This special ultra limited edition is highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Mexico 66 Baja
The Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Baja is a variation of  Mexico 66 model and has three Velcro straps across the forefoot.

FABRE 74
The name FABRE itself comes from the abbreviation of the basketball term, “fast break”. At the time of release, the Onitsuka Tiger Fabre utilised cushioning and outsole construction never used before. The new Onitsuka Tiger Fabre combines elements from the original sneaker and some of Japan’s most popular basketball shoes today.

ROTATION 77
The Onitsuka Tiger Rotation 77 features several design elements from volleyball shoes of the 1970's. The original Onitsuka Tiger Rotation 77 was popular with world class athletes and recommended by both national and international federations.

CALIFORNIA 78
By the late 1970s, the “Jogging Boom” in the United States had spread worldwide and had quickly gained popularity in Japan. The centerpiece of Onitsuka Tiger's jogging shoes at the time was the California, named in honor of the birthplace of the popular activity. Concerned with the safety of runners while jogging at night, Onitsuka Tiger California was the first Onitsuka Tiger sneaker to utilize mesh and came equipped with large reflective pieces for better visibility. The Onitsuka Tiger California 78 keeps the overall design of the original sneaker with additional special details commemorating the state and one of its symbols
